Why You Should Avoid Buying Software on Ebay, Craigslist, or Downloading Illegally

We understand, you want to save your hard earned money when making a software purchase.  A quick search finds you on an auction site or looking for someone to buy from locally.  You find that software you’ve been searching for at a huge discount but don’t lay down your money yet!

The Risks of not Buying From an Authorized Reseller Are Real

There are 2 ways illegitimate can make it to you and both have risks you should be completely aware of.

Volume/Enterprise License Scheme

Counterfeit/Non-authorized resellers will purchase a volume license for a product and then resell it as if it were a commercial license.

For example if you have received a message when trying to install Creative Suite 6, stating the serial number you are using has been revoked, or is invalid, it is because the serial number you are attempting to use has been blocked by Adobe. Adobe blocks serial numbers that are known to have not been issued by Adobe, or are known to have been used fraudulently by unauthorized sellers to produce counterfeit software. Unfortunately, you may only know the serial number has been blocked for this reason when installing, re-activating or reinstalling Adobe software.

Pirated software

Downloading software from torrents or other sites providing the software illegally provides many opportunities for risk to arise.  The software can contain viruses, malware, key loggers and ransomware.  Keeping these bugs off your computer is hard enough!  Another thing to consider is the risk of personal identity and credit card information being stolen.

The Other Risk - Monetary

Even if are able to successfully install pirated or non-authorized software, if you are a business you risk software manufacturers coming after you legally.  Businesses that unconsciously installed this type of software have been fined thousands while companies that knowing used pirated software have been leveled with millions in fines.

Checking Software for Validity

If you’ve purchased software and are unsure if it’s legitamate, most manufacturers have online tools to validate.  For example, the links below can be used for Adobe and Microsoft products:

https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/

Safest way to purchase genuine software is through an Adobe Authorized Reseller or Microsoft Partner like King of Software.

Adobe makes it easy to search for a certified reseller.

  • Enter the partner name
  • Enter optional city
  • click find!
Purchasing legitamate software  may be an expensive investment but compared to the time and money lost using illigitamte software it's more than worth it!
